Stan Newens: co-operator and internationalist

Created by Claire 3 years ago

Stan's role in the co-operative movement, particularly his Presidency of the London Co-operative Society was the context in which the Weiss family appreciated his commitment to the broad labour and peace campaigns. The late Manny Weiss (1916 - 1999) served on the Board of the LCS during Stan's leadership and they shared basic aims and principles, working together for the co-operative cause, even though their political leanings were divergent. Stan was a friend to the whole family, including the late Rita Weiss who was a member for the Eastern Region on the Member Relations Committee, Leonard Weiss on the Political Committee and Claire Weiss on the Walthamstow District Committee.

Stan has made a tremendous contribution to our wider family through his authoring of Manny's biography, written during Manny's lifetime. Stan's historical research expertise, and his ability to capture in writing Manny's oral accounts, have given us a depth of detail that would otherwise have been lost to the family. We were very proud that Stan officiated at Manny's funeral in 1999, making generous comments and pertinent observations, all valued by the wide range of people attending. In addition to their unity of purpose in the co-operative movement, Stan and Manny had shared East End origins and later residency in Essex. His support to Manny and Rita's campaigning in retirement as they set up the Southend & District Pensioners Campaign greatly encouraged them.

We send our deep condolences to Stan's family and were privileged to be able to share the wonderful commemoration today. May his work live on!
