A family friend for 72 years

Stan and my father, Peter Hill, were History undergraduates together at UCL and retained a lifelong mutual respect despite evolving political differences. They shared a love of their subject and a scholarly approach. I must have met Stan as a child on various occasions but only really got to know him after my Dad's death in 1988. I soon discovered what a wonderful man he was, retaining his commitment to scholarly standards in the things he researched and wrote while retaining his political passion - not an easy balance to strike. I marvelled at the breadth of his interests and his human qualities - when my daughter lost her husband at the early age of 32 his sympathy and advice, born of his own experience, was a great comfort. It was wonderful to see that he, with Sandra and all the children, had been able to emerge from his own early tragedy to make a strong and happy family unit.

I much admired Stan's moral courage, intelligence and kindness, and like countless others I am very sad that he is no longer with us.
